Card not present transactions
Card-Not-Present (CNP) transactions refer to transactions where the physical payment card is not physically presented during the payment process.
In CNP transactions, the cardholder provides their card details or uses alternative payment methods for the transaction. This mode of payment is commonly used in online and remote transactions where the actual card is not swiped, inserted, or tapped at a physical Point of Sale (POS).
Types of Card Not Present transactions
- eCommerce transaction: An eCommerce card transaction refers to the process of using a payment card to make make a payment for goods or services in an online or electronic commerce (eCommerce) setting. This could be through an App or website. These are typical card-not-present transactions without physically presenting a card, relying instead on security measures such as CVV codes, multifactor authentication and 3D Secure.
- Phone or mail order transaction: Phone orders are transactions where card details and billing information are provided over the phone to the merchant to complete the purchase. Mail orders are transactions where the card details and billing information are placed on a physical order form and posted to the merchant to complete the purchase.
- Card-on-File (COF) transactions: Card-on-File transactions (also referred to as Credential-on-File) are made using a card that was previosuly submitted to the merchant and approved for future use.
- Account Status Inquiry (ASI): ASI is a service used in card payments processing to check the current status of a cardholder's account before authorizing a transaction, in order to determine if the account is open, valid, and in good standing. It allows the issuer to provide a response indicating whether an account is active, lost/stolen, over-limit, or blocked, and whether a payment should proceed. ASI is often used for card-not-present transactions to mitigate risk. The inquiry can check for positive (active), negative (inactive), or inconclusive (unknown) status values from the issuer, either on its own or combined with an authorization request, serving as an additional verification layer before payments are approved.
