PIN verification
PIN verification involves the processes related to the validation and verification of Personal Identification Numbers (PIN's) associated with payment cards. This crucial aspect ensures the security and integrity of electronic transactions.
Online PIN verification
PIN data is sent and validated as part of the transaction data in Banking.Live.
Dependent on circumstances including the merchant country and transaction type, transactions may be validated as online PIN transactions. Typically online PIN is used on ATM transactions globally and POS transactions in certain markets.
When an online PIN transaction is performed, rather than the PIN being validated at the terminal between the terminal and the card, the entered PIN is instead encrypted as a PIN block and transmitted through the network to be validated by Banking.Live.
One advantage to this, is that there can not be the same discrepancy issue with the PIN as can be faced during offline PIN transactions, when the PIN has been updated on Banking.Live but not yet updated on the physical plastic.
Online PIN change
Online PIN change refers to the process of updating a payment card's PIN through an ATM or a similar online connection.
In this scenario, when a cardholder decides to change their PIN, they typically use an ATM to initiate the change. The updated PIN is securely transmitted to Banking.Live. Paymentology processes the request promptly, instantly updating the online PIN associated with the card.
This change is effective immediately for online transactions, ensuring that the cardholder can use the updated PIN for subsequent transactions conducted over electronic channels.
Offline PIN verification
Offline PIN is stored on the chip for EMV chip cards. This means that cardholder PIN verification can occur even if a POS terminal is not connected to a network.
As with any PIN, the offline PIN will be blocked after too many unsuccessful attempts.
During an offline PIN verification, the terminal directly queries the card itself to determine the correctness of the PIN entered by the cardholder.
Unlike online PIN verification, the actual PIN is not sent to Banking.Live for validation; instead, the system is informed of the card's response.
