Card present transactions
Card Present transactions refer to transactions where the physical payment card is physically present during the payment process. In these transactions, the cardholder typically presents their payment card, to a card reader or terminal at the Point of Sale (POS).
Types of Card Present transactions
- ATM cash withdrawal: The process where a cardholder uses an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) to withdraw cash from their account. The transaction involves authenticating the user and dispensing the requested amount in cash.
- ATM balance enquiry: A transaction performed at an ATM to check the available balance in the cardholder's account without withdrawing any funds. It provides the cardholder with information about their account balance.
- POS purchase: A Point of Sale (POS) transaction where the cardholder uses their payment card to make a purchase at a merchant's location. The card is swiped, inserted, or tapped at the POS terminal to initiate the transaction.
- POS pre-authorization: A temporary hold of a certain amount on the cardholder's account to verify the availability of funds before the actual purchase. The final amount is settled later, ensuring the merchant is paid the correct amount.
- POS preauthorization increment: An increase in the previously authorized amount in a POS pre-authorization. This may occur when the cardholder adds more items to their purchase after the initial authorization.
- POS pre-authorization completion: The completion of a pre-authorization transaction at a POS terminal, where the final amount is confirmed and processed. The merchant charges the cardholder the actual purchase amount, and the initial hold amount is adjusted accordingly.
- POS refund: A transaction initiated by the merchant to refund the cardholder for a previous purchase. It involves crediting the cardholder's account with the refunded amount.
- POS void: The cancellation of a POS transaction before it is finalized. Voids are typically used to reverse a sale or pre-authorization before the settlement.
- POS balance enquiry: Similar to an ATM balance enquiry, this is a transaction performed at a POS terminal to check the available balance in the cardholder's bank account without making a purchase. It provides account balance information at the point of sale.
