Chargeback Impact on Credit Accounts
Understand How Chargebacks Affect Credit Accounts
When a customer disputes a credit card transaction, the financial impact depends on when the transaction was disputed, whether provisional credit is enabled and how the dispute is ultimately resolved.
PayCredit applies the relevant financial treatment to the customer's credit account based on these circumstances.
This guide explains what happens to the customer's balance, available credit, interest, statement obligations and delinquency throughout the chargeback lifecycle.
1. What determines the financial treatment?
Four factors determine how PayCredit processes a chargeback.
| Factor | What PayCredit considers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Provisional-credit configuration | Is Direct Chargeback Credit enabled (Y) or disabled (N)? | Determines whether eligible settled disputes receive provisional financial relief while open. |
| Transaction stage | Has the original transaction been authorised or settled? | Determines whether PayCredit is handling an authorisation hold or a settled receivable. |
| Statement and payment status | Has the transaction been billed? Has the customer paid? | Determines which account obligations and financial components may need adjustment. |
| Final dispute outcome | Did the customer win, lose or partially win? | Determines which financial adjustments become permanent or are reversed. |
The same disputed amount can produce different financial results depending on the combination of these factors.
2. Identify when the transaction was disputed
Use the original transaction's lifecycle stage to understand the applicable financial treatment.
| Transaction stage | Account position when disputed | Financial treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Settled, not billed | The transaction has settled but has not yet appeared on a statement. | Applicable treatment can reduce disputed principal, restore available credit and recalculate pre-bill interest and rewards where configured. |
| Billed, not paid | The transaction forms part of a billed obligation that remains unpaid. | Statement balance, total due, minimum payment, interest, fees, available credit and delinquency calculations can change. |
| Billed and paid | The transaction has already been billed and paid. | Applicable adjustments affect the current account position and may create a credit balance, refund position or future-cycle offset. |
3. Understand how provisional credit changes the result
The Direct Chargeback Credit setting determines whether eligible settled disputes receive provisional financial relief before the final outcome.
| Dispute stage | Y: Provisional credit enabled | N: Provisional credit disabled |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute raised | Eligible settled dispute receives provisional financial relief. | Dispute is recorded without provisional credit. |
| Dispute remains open | PayCredit maintains the provisional financial position and applies the relevant interest and delinquency treatment. | No provisional financial relief is applied. Interest continues according to programme rules. |
| Final outcome recorded | Provisional credit is made permanent, reversed or partially retained according to the outcome. | Applicable final financial adjustments are applied according to the outcome. |
Example: £100 settled purchase disputed before billing
A customer disputes a £100 purchase after settlement but before the statement is generated.
If Direct Chargeback Credit = Y:
- PayCredit records the eligible dispute and applies provisional financial relief.
- The disputed principal and available credit receive the applicable provisional treatment.
- Applicable pre-bill interest is adjusted.
- The provisional financial position remains in place until the final outcome.
If Direct Chargeback Credit = N:
- PayCredit records the dispute without provisional credit.
- No provisional financial relief is applied while the dispute remains open.
- Interest continues according to programme rules.
- Financial adjustment waits for the final dispute outcome.
The configuration determines when provisional relief is applied, not whether the customer ultimately wins the dispute.
4. Understand what changes after statement posting
Once a transaction has appeared on a statement, chargeback processing may affect the customer's payment obligations.
The financial treatment differs depending on whether the customer has paid the billed amount.
Scenario A: The statement has been generated but remains unpaid
Assume the £100 disputed transaction is included in an unpaid statement.
Depending on the programme configuration and applicable chargeback treatment, PayCredit can adjust:
- Statement balance: Reflects the applicable dispute treatment.
- Total due: May change based on the disputed amount.
- Minimum payment: Recalculated where applicable under programme dispute rules.
- Interest and fees: Adjusted according to the applicable financial treatment.
- Available credit: Reflects the relevant credit adjustment.
- Delinquency: Recalculated based on the remaining payment obligation.
What happens if the customer is already delinquent?
For billed and unpaid transactions, the disputed amount is excluded from applicable days-past-due (DPD) calculations while the dispute remains open.
The lifecycle model supports DPD freeze or pause and delinquency bucket recalculation for this stage.
For example, assume the customer has an unpaid obligation of £200, including the disputed £100 transaction.
The chargeback may change the amount contributing to the applicable delinquency calculation. However, the remaining £100 obligation must still be assessed under programme rules.
Important: A chargeback does not automatically clear all delinquency or prevent the customer from becoming delinquent again.
Scenario B: The statement has already been paid
Assume the customer paid the statement before disputing the £100 transaction.
The chargeback affects the customer's current account position rather than rewriting the historical statement.
| Component | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Principal | Reflected in the cardholder's current credit position. |
| Interest | Applicable accrued or billed interest is adjusted. |
| Fees | Eligible billed fees are adjusted. |
| Account position | May create a credit balance, refund position or future-cycle offset. |
| Historical statement | The previously paid statement is not rewritten. |
With provisional credit enabled, the applicable relief may affect the account while the dispute is open.
With provisional credit disabled, financial adjustment waits for the final outcome.
Retrospective financial effects are posted in the current active period rather than changing closed ledger periods.
5. Understand the final dispute outcome
Once the final dispute outcome is recorded in PayCredit, the relevant financial treatment is finalised.
The outcome determines whether provisional credit becomes permanent, is reversed or is partially retained.
| Final outcome | Status | PayCredit financial treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Customer win | A | The upheld amount receives final customer-win treatment. Applicable provisional credit becomes permanent. Associated interest and eligible fees are reversed, and upheld principal is not re-billed. |
| Merchant win | R | The rejected amount receives merchant-win treatment. Applicable provisional credit is reversed. Principal can be re-billed, and applicable catch-up interest is calculated. |
| Partial win | S | The upheld portion receives customer-win treatment and the rejected portion receives merchant-win treatment. |
Example: Three possible outcomes for the £100 dispute
| Outcome | Amount upheld | Amount rejected | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer win | £100 | £0 | The full disputed amount receives customer-win treatment. |
| Merchant win | £0 | £100 | The full disputed amount receives merchant-win treatment. |
| Partial win | £60 | £40 | £60 receives customer-win treatment and £40 receives merchant-win treatment. |
For partial wins, the upheld amount plus the rejected amount must equal the total disputed amount.
The exact interest, fee, balance and payment adjustments depend on the transaction lifecycle stage and programme rules.
6. Understand other financial treatment conditions
| Condition | Applicable treatment |
|---|---|
| Rewards and cashback | Adjustments apply where the required programme capability is configured. The documented Phase 1 scope excludes this treatment where the capability is not configured. |
| Historical paid statements | Historical statements are not rewritten. Financial effects are reflected in the current account position. |
| Closed ledger periods | Retrospective adjustments are posted in the current active period. |
| Multiple dispute cycles | Where unsupported, configured validation and exception controls apply. Cumulative reversals must not exceed the valid remaining disputed amount. |
Summary
PayCredit determines the financial treatment of a chargeback based on the combination of:
- Programme configuration: Whether provisional credit is enabled.
- Transaction lifecycle: Whether the transaction is authorised, settled, billed or paid.
- Customer account position: Which principal, interest, payment and delinquency obligations exist.
- Final dispute outcome: Whether the customer wins, the merchant wins or the outcome is partial.
These factors determine the applicable credit account and ledger adjustments throughout the chargeback lifecycle.
